Question #4: Lighting: just right or too much/too little?

3 question marks-graphic

Is your indoor and outdoor lighting by chance or is it by thoughtful design?

Goldilocks wanted her porridge “just right.” Similarly, the lighting at your property needs to be “just right” in regards to:

  • Safety (examples: too much outdoor lighting can cause glares and people not being able to see as well in the dark. Too little lighting can be hazardous.)
  • Guest and participant needs (examples: wishing to see the dark sky, indoor room lighting for activities and sleeping areas, lighted pathways at night)
  • Initial cost of bulbs and fixtures
  • Energy usage and cost
  • Mission (What type of energy, bulbs, fixtures are in alignment with the mission?)
  • Maintenance required
  • Wildlife interference (Are there areas that are lit and don’t need to be? Or are lights needed to deter wildlife?)

About the series. Each month, a site and facilities question will be posed that you can discuss with your staff.
