Everyone works hard to have their facilities clean for different campers and guests.
But is your level of custodial cleanliness what you wish? Is that level by happenstance, or by intention?
Below are some ideas of what you can discuss with your team, administration, committee, board, etc.:
- Which areas need a higher level of cleanliness? Why?
- How do we ensure the right level of cleanliness is regularly performed?
- Who needs to be aware of these indicators?
- How much time is needed for maintaining the appropriate level of cleanliness?
APPA has five levels of cleanliness. Here’s a summary and the link below has specific descriptions, indicators, and management tools. While it is designed for educational settings, many ideas relate to outdoor properties.
Level 1—Orderly Spotlessness
Level 2—Ordinary Tidiness
Level 3—Casual Inattention
Level 4—Moderate Dinginess
Level 5—Unkempt Neglect

APPA comes from the Association of Physical Plant Administrators in the late 1960’s through the early 1990’s. Today, the association is known as APPA: Leadership in Educational Facilities.
About the series. Each month, a site and facilities question will be posed that you can discuss with your staff.
